Cultivate Your Passions and Hobbies With These Classes, Workshops, and Groups
At Legacy Healing Center, we understand the importance of encouraging our Baltimore clients to look into different sober-friendly hobbies. From the time you first reach out to us, we will take every opportunity to learn more about you to get more benefit out of your time with us.
How Developing Hobbies, Creativity, and Interests Can Help People Stay Sober
As you begin to work through your drug rehab or alcohol rehab program, you may start to find that certain passions or hobbies fell by the wayside when you were in active addiction. Once your mind begins to clear, we encourage you to explore your interests, so you begin to establish yourself as a healthy and sober individual. These positive hobbies can help keep your mind occupied away from drug or alcohol use for life in recovery.
Do you enjoy drawing or painting? Have your artistic talents been overshadowed as a result of your addiction? Now that you have completed drug rehab or alcohol rehab, you can refocus your attention on fine-tuning your artistic abilities. Several locations in Baltimore offer art classes:
Jubilee Arts
Jubilee Arts allows students of all talent levels to learn more about various art techniques. Regardless of the medium that you choose, you will find art classes throughout the day. Be sure to check ahead to make sure that you don’t have to preregister for the course.
The Schuler School of Fine Art offers both formal art classes and classes for students who would like to take courses on a more sporadic basis. The instructors at this school are always happy to speak with you in greater detail regarding the options you have for classes, and they will provide you with valuable insight regarding how you can improve your technique.
If you enjoy being under the bright lights of the stage, here are a couple of acting classes that you can enroll in:
Baltimore Improv Group
Any actor will tell you that timing is everything. The Baltimore Improv Group classes can help you improve your stage presence so that you can enjoy your time in front of an audience. Courses at this location begin later at night, so it’s an excellent after-work option.
The Baltimore Actors’ Theatre allows students to take part in different classes and transition into leading roles at various theatrical events throughout the year. Be sure to sign up for a class ahead of time as spots fill up fast.
Do you keep a journal? Do you find that you enjoy writing down your thoughts and ideas instead of physically verbalizing them? If so, you should think about attending one of the writing workshops in the area:
Writers In-Person Meeting
This group takes place every Sunday at 1 PM. You will have the chance to communicate with other writers who will help you to critique your work. Whether you’re interested in publishing it or you simply want to develop your skills, you are sure to enjoy your time at this workshop.
Attending this group provides you with the chance to share your story, regardless of where that journey takes you. The meeting occurs on the third Tuesday at 7 PM every month. This is a virtual meeting, so all you need to do is open your computer and log in.
Interesting Meet-Up Groups in Baltimore
There are several other Meet-Up groups that are stationed throughout the Baltimore area. Here are a few examples of groups you may want to try:
Tuesday Tennis for Beginners
Exercise is a great way to help you to maintain your sobriety. The Tuesday Tennis for Beginners group meets every Tuesday at 6:30 at Druid Hill Park. You will be able to improve your tennis skills and meet other people with similar interests.
