If someone asked you who George Herman Ruth, Jr. is, would you know George Herman Ruth, Jr. is better known to baseball fans everywhere as Babe Ruth? Although Babe Ruth will always be associated with the New York Yankees, many people are surprised to learn that he was actually born in Baltimore. In fact, the house where he was born is currently a museum designed to capture every aspect of Ruth’s life, including his illustrious baseball career.
If you’re a fan of the television show “Dirty Jobs,” you’ll certainly recognize the name Mike Rowe. Rowe is a well-known name among people who enjoy watching the Discovery Channel. Not only did he host “Dirty Jobs,” but he also is the voice-over narrator of several other shows on the channel including “The Deadliest Catch”. Rowe was born and raised in Baltimore, but he also sang with the Baltimore Opera for some time. If you subscribe to any of his social media accounts, you may catch an impromptu singing session.
Until 2019, Elijah Cummings was arguably the most popular politician in the state of Maryland. He was born in Baltimore and lived his life trying to help the people of his hometown and state. He served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1983 to 1996 before he made the leap to Washington, D.C., where he served as the Representative for Maryland’s 7th congressional district until 2019. Sadly, Cummings struggled with undisclosed health issues and ultimately passed away in October of 2019.
John Kassir is a comedian and actor who made his mark on the industry with his role as the voice of the Crypt Keeper on the HBO show “Tales from the Crypt.” Kassir has also added his voice to several other shows, including the popular 90’s Nickelodeon show “Aaahh!!! Real Monsters”, “As Told by Ginger,” and “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.” Although Kassir has an impressive resume, he has made it clear that he has no intention of slowing down.
Michael Phelps cemented his name in history with his incredible swimming talents. Phelps is currently known as the most decorated Olympian of all time with 28 Olympic medals. He broke countless records and quickly became an athlete that Americans could be proud of. Although he announced his retirement after the 2012 Summer Olympics, he decided to come out of retirement for the 2016 Summer Olympics and would go on to win more gold medals. Although Phelps no longer lives in Baltimore, he will always be a hometown hero.
